Qmacs Editor Support

Questions, bug reports, and help for the macOS app.

Contact Us

The fastest way to reach the Qmacs Editor team is by email. We read every message and typically respond within 2–3 business days.

Email: hello@qmacs.app

When reporting a problem, please include your macOS version, the Qmacs Editor version (shown in the app’s Settings window), and a short description of what you expected and what happened. Do not include your master password or vault contents in a support request — we can never see or recover them.

Frequently Asked Questions

I forgot my master password. Can you recover my vault?

No. Qmacs Editor never stores your master password and has no recovery backdoor. The vault stores only an encrypted Argon2id verifier and its contents are protected with XChaCha20-Poly1305. If the master password is lost, the encrypted vault cannot be decrypted by anyone, including us. Ordinary (non-vault) file buffers are not affected and remain editable.

Where is my data stored?

Everything is stored locally on your Mac. The encrypted vault defaults to the ~/.qmacs folder, and you can choose a different folder in Settings or the Lock screen. Qmacs Editor is offline-first: the current build does not require an account and does not sync your notes to any server.

How do I reopen the main window after closing it?

Choose Window › Qmacs Editor Window from the menu bar, or press ⌘0. Clicking the app’s Dock icon also brings the window back.

How do I set up multi-factor authentication (MFA)?

When creating a vault, choose an MFA method — None, TOTP, or Security Key code. For TOTP, add the displayed secret to an authenticator app and enter the current code before the vault is created. MFA data is encrypted inside the local vault file.

How do I change my master password?

Unlock the vault, then in Settings enter a new strong password and confirmation and choose Change Password. This re-encrypts the vault under the new password; the old password no longer works afterward.

What are the system requirements?

Qmacs Editor is a native macOS application. Install it from the Mac App Store, which will confirm compatibility with your version of macOS before downloading.

Troubleshooting

If the app behaves unexpectedly, first quit and relaunch it. If a vault will not unlock, confirm you are pointing at the correct vault folder (shown on the Lock screen) and that any required MFA code is current. If a problem persists, email us the details above and we will help.
